A Southern porch is made for fall — it’s where pumpkins meet evergreens, warm hues meet cool breezes, and everyday entrances become welcoming seasonal statements. For @kenziemariehome, we wanted her front porch to feel festive yet timeless — full of texture, color, and charm that transitions beautifully from fall into the holiday season.
Using a combination of Southern Living Plant Collection favorites, a few layers of pumpkins, and natural elements like pine straw and lanterns, we turned this entryway into a picture-perfect autumn welcome.

1. Framing the Front Door with Heritage™ Better Boxwood
The heart of this design starts at the front door. We framed Kenzie’s entry with two large Heritage™ Better Boxwood topiaries — one on each side — for a symmetrical, classic Southern look. Their dense green foliage adds structure and elegance while keeping the focus on the home’s beautiful wood door and brick steps. Better yet, these boxwoods are naturally disease-resistant, ensuring they’ll stay vibrant season after season.
2. Layered Containers Full of Texture and Warmth
Working down the steps, we brought in a collection of fall-colored containers filled with complementary textures and tones:
- Mojo® Pittosporum for its soft, variegated green-and-gold foliage that adds brightness to the grouping.
- Blush Pink™ Nandina for its feathery leaves and subtle blush tones that tie in with the autumn palette.
- Dragon Prince™ Cryptomeria for dense, rounded texture and rich evergreen color — a perfect “filler” that adds weight and depth.
- Fire Chief™ Arborvitae for its signature fiery-orange glow, which intensifies in cooler weather and brings the warmth of fall right to the doorstep.
Each pot was chosen and placed to create a natural, layered flow — some nestled close to the steps, others spilling slightly over the edges for a relaxed yet polished look.
3. Anchoring the Steps with ‘Yuletide’ Camellias
At the base of either side of the steps, we planted ‘Yuletide Camellias‘ surrounded by clusters of Fire Chief™ Arborvitae. The Camellias’ glossy leaves and bold red blooms bring instant drama and seasonal cheer, while the Arborvitae adds a contrasting pop of texture and color. Together, they ground the display and visually connect the containers on the steps to the landscape beds below.
4. The Finishing Touches: Pumpkins, Lanterns, and Fall Magic
To tie everything together, she scattered an assortment of pumpkins in warm oranges, creams, and greens — each one adding a touch of whimsy and natural color. Black lanterns bring height and a cozy glow, especially in the evening light. The overall effect is effortlessly festive — layered, warm, and undeniably Southern.

The Result:
The front porch now feels like a seasonal showpiece — full of life, color, and texture. From the crisp greenery of the Better Boxwoods to the fiery tones of the Fire Chief™ Arborvitae and the timeless beauty of ‘Yuletide’ Camellias, every detail works together to create a front entrance that celebrates the best of fall.
Whether you’re welcoming guests or simply enjoying a quiet evening on the porch, this look proves that a few well-chosen plants (and a few pumpkins) can turn any entry into a fall favorite.
