Southern Living® Junipers: Strong Structure, Year‑Round Color

Junipers are the backbone evergreens of Southern landscapes—sun‑loving, drought‑tough once established, and naturally architectural. The Southern Living Plant Collection curates juniper varieties that deliver crisp form, dependable performance, and four‑season appeal with minimal upkeep. Whether you’re styling a tight urban lot or a sprawling garden, our junipers provide the vertical punctuation, privacy, and polish your design needs.

Why Choose Juniper

From heat and humidity to wind and occasional drought, junipers take Southern conditions in stride. In full sun and well‑drained soil, they hold rich color, dense texture, and neat outlines with very little pruning. Many selections are excellent for hedges and screens, while others shine as specimen accents or container pillars at the front door. Once roots are established, water deeply but infrequently and enjoy years of easy greenery.

Featured Varieties

Blue Point Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Blue Point’)

A classic pyramidal juniper with glowing blue‑green foliage, Blue Point Juniper delivers a stately column without constant shearing. Use a single plant to anchor beds and entries or group several into a refined, narrow screen.

  • Mature size: ~12′ high × 8′ wide
  • Light: Full sun for best color and density
  • Zones: USDA 4a–9b
  • Design tips: Space about 5–6 feet on center for a living wall or give individual specimens 8 feet of elbow room to showcase the silhouette. Blue Point often bears bluish berry‑cones (ornamental, not edible), adding winter interest.

‘Spartan’ Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Spartan’)

Sleek and formal, Spartan Juniper grows fast to form a narrow, deep‑green column—ideal where you need height without width. It’s a top pick for hedging along driveways, fencing, or tight side yards, and it thrives in hot, sunny exposures.

  • Mature size: ~15′ high × 3–5′ wide
  • Light: Full sun
  • Zones: USDA 4a–9b
  • Design tips: For a dense Spartan hedge, plant 3–4 feet on center; allow 5+ feet for stand‑alone specimens. ‘Spartan’ is typically a male selection, so cones/“berries” are rare—useful where fruit drop isn’t desired.

Where They Work Best

  • Privacy & windbreaks: Form elegant, space‑saving screens that hold their shape year‑round.
  • Entries & accents: Frame gates and porches with matched columns for instant structure.
  • Containers: In large, well‑drained pots, junipers bring upright form to patios and pool decks (refresh potting mix every few years).
  • Water‑wise plantings: Once established, junipers are excellent partners for low‑irrigation designs.

Planting & Care Basics

  • Sun: Plant in full sun (6–8+ hours) for best color and density.
  • Soil: Average, well‑drained soils are ideal; avoid areas that stay wet.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist the first season; then water deeply but less often.
  • Feeding: A light, slow‑release fertilizer in early spring supports steady growth.
  • Pruning: Minimal—touch up after the spring flush if you prefer crisper lines. Avoid heavy cuts into old, leafless wood.

Spacing at a Glance

  • Blue Point Juniper: 5–6′ on center for a hedge; 8′+ for individual specimens.
  • ‘Spartan’ Juniper: 3–4′ on center for a hedge; 5′+ for individual specimens.

Design Pairings

Pair the cool blue‑green of Blue Point with the gold tones of Sunshine Ligustrum, EverColor® Carex ‘Everillo’, or Forever Goldy® Arborvitae. Set the crisp, dark‑green lines of Spartan against flowering favorites like ScentAmazing® Gardenia or White Wedding® Hydrangea for high‑contrast, four‑season compositions.
